So, we are together preventing these illegal immigrants entering to Indonesia as a transit to Australia."Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Police and the Australian Federal Policy (AFP) are stepping up efforts to monitor people smuggling in many parts of Indonesia as transit points before illegal immigrants head to Australia.
"We have often met with Australian Federal Police Commissioner Tony William Negus APM, and discussed the problem. We have also had discussions with AFP Assistant Commissioner Ramzi Jabbour, to jointly improve the monitoring," said National police`s Head of Crime Investigation Police Commissioner General Sutarman, here Wednesday.
Sutarman said that there are a number of issues that had been discussed and addressed by the National Police and the AFP.
One of the issues discussed was the use of several places in Indonesia as transit areas for illegal immigrants before continuing their journey to Australia, Sutarman said.
"So, we are together preventing these illegal immigrants entering to Indonesia as a transit to Australia," he said.
Sutarman said that it is a quite difficult task because these illegal immigrants are able to adapt with local custom.
In fact some of them had even married local people but who then left after having children.
"This has become a serious issue and cooperation should be increased by the two countries (Indonesia and Australia)," he said.
