The secretary-general was deeply saddened to hear of the death of a Zambian military observer ..."United Nations (ANTARA News/Xinhua-OANA) - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Saturday said that he was "deeply saddened" by the death of a peacekeeper in an attack in Sudan`s Darfur region on Friday, and expected a "swift action" by Sudan to "bring the perpetrators to justice."
"The secretary-general was deeply saddened to hear of the death of a Zambian military observer of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) in an attack by unidentified armed assailants in El Fasher, North Darfur yesterday," said a statement issued here by Ban`s spokesman.
"The secretary-general expresses his deepest sympathies to the families of the fallen peacekeeper, the Government of Zambia and to all UNAMID personnel," the statement said.
In July 2007, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution to set up the joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping operation in Darfur (UNAMID) to address the humanitarian crisis in the western region of Sudan. This joint peacekeeping mission replaced a previous mission led solely by the African Union.
