"Wastewater treatment in Jakarta is still bad. That`s why we want to build this integrated water treatment plant. We will start by building two of the six planned wastewater treatment plants," said Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama at City Hall, Jakarta, on Friday.
Basuki noted that the construction of the six integrated wastewater treatment zones in Jakarta was being handled in cooperation with the Ministry of Public Works (PU), after it obtained a grant from the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA).
"The development of two wastewater treatment plant zones will be handled by the Jakarta provincial government, while the rest will be completed by the Ministry of Public Works," stated Basuki.
Through the construction of the integrated wastewater treatment plant zones, the city government will have better control over domestic wastewater, aiming to produce zero waste.
The city government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works, had previously agreed to start construction on the integrated wastewater treatment plant, or Jakarta Sewerage, within the city limits.
The Jakarta Sewerage will serve all five Jakarta municipalities based on the geographical conditions in each region.
The sixth wastewater treatment development zone is expected to cost up to Rp70 trillion.
Thirty percent of the cost to develop the six plants will be borne by the Jakarta city government, while the remaining 70 percent will be borne by the Ministry of Public Works. (*)
