Marty said both nations are worried that the protracted Syrian conflict will give rise to extremism worldwide.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia and Iran shared the view that the Syrian conflict should be settled through a political and diplomatic means and without armed violence, according to Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa.

"We have just discussed the question of Syria and we shared the view about (the solution to the Syrian conflict)," Marty spoke during a press conference, after accompanying President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Marty said both nations are worried that the protracted Syrian conflict will give rise to extremism worldwide.

Indonesian leaders were of the opinion that Iran must be involved in any effort to resolve the Syrian conflict, he said.

Indonesia was one of the participants in the Geneva II Conference held in Montreaux, Switzerland, to find solutions to the Syrian conflict. The conference brought together representatives from 40 countries, the UN, the EU, the Arab league and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Marty said Iran must participate in such meetings because it is part of the solution to the Syrian conflict.

Javad Zarif said earlier that Syria needs a political solution, not military intervention, to end the three years of fighting in the country.

"There has to be political solution in Syria, not military. Nobody from outside Syria can impose who and how the Syrian people should govern themselves," he said during a public speaking event here.

According to Javad Zarif, Irans approach to the Syrian conflict was based upon the belief that the Syrian people should decide their own future and not be dictated to by other countries. (*)
