Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said on Sunday Mount Slamet which straddles the five districts of Banyumas, Purbalingga, Pemalang, Tegal, and Brebes in Central Java, Indonesia remains on the third highest alert status.

"Until now it is still on the alert status," Head of the BNPB Information Center and Public Relations Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Sunday.

Despite the recent eruption, the condition was still safe as local residents lived outside the danger zone, he said.

After all, he called on the local residents to stay alert and follow the development of Mount Slamet.

The agency also called on the local residents to comply with instruction from the local authorities, particularly with regard to a safe distance from the volcano.

"The local people must carry out activities according to a safe distance recommendation. Dont go beyond the radius banned by the authorities," he said.

The BNPB kept coordinating with all relevant agencies to monitor the development of Mount Slamet.

"We keep coordinating with all relevant agencies, particularly district governments," he said.

According to the Mount Slamet monitoring post at Gambuhan village in Pemalang district, the volcano sent thick white smoke up to 150-300 meters into the sky few days ago.

Since then, the volcano has 30 times spewed thick brownish white smoke to the height of 300-1,500 meters in the westerly direction.
