The details of the partnership were announced at the Phoenix TV and Huawei Omnimedia Cloud Data Center Summit held this week in Beijing on June 12. The summit offered a platform for nearly 300 IT directors and industry experts from well-known TV stations, media groups, network media organizations, post-production companies, media integrators and consulting firms worldwide to discuss ICT infrastructure construction opportunities, challenges, and practices in the omnimedia era.

The initiative, covering Phoenix TV's main centers in Beijing and Hong Kong (the '2' in the '2&7'), as well as its offices in Shanghai, Taipei, London, Paris, Washington DC and Los Angeles (the '7'), will enable the broadcaster to address the emerging era of 'omnimedia' as users behaviors change and they consume news and information on multiple screens, in extreme high definition and on multiple platforms. The move will help Phoenix TV to accelerate its content production worldwide away from tape-based production to online, real time availability and provide its viewers with an enhanced user experience. The initiative is the core of Phoenix TV's omnimedia strategy.

"The way we create and our users consume our content are changing radically and we are deploying technology to address these changing needs," said Wang Hongbo, Deputy Director of Information and Network Management at Phoenix TV. "The advent of cloud computing has brought new challenges and opportunities to the IT industry. Our transformation to meet the demands of the omnimedia age see us building a resource-sharing platform that converges our corporate resources and serves our scattered institutions, faster and cheaper. We believe that Huawei's distributed cloud data center solution is helping us to deploy a highly secure, reliable and operable IT platform," he added.

David He, President of Marketing and Solution Sales of Huawei Enterprise Business Group, said, "Phoenix TV and Huawei's collaboration will accelerate the omnimedia age and provide consumers with the ultimate media experience. With technical innovations, Phoenix TV is interconnecting its global resources and providing a high-quality omnimedia platform for its global consumers. Huawei has deployed a variety of innovative ICT solutions and products, including distributed cloud data center, agile network, and converged storage, for Phoenix TV to address the omnimedia opportunity."

Phoenix TV has completed its data centers in Beijing, Hong Kong and London. By the end of 2014, Phoenix TV will have built and integrated its six remaining regional data centers. The new architecture provided by Huawei helps Phoenix TV to logically manage physically dispersed data center resources in a unified manner, enabling Phoenix TV to deliver news on key events from around the world in as little as five minutes.

In addition to the distributed cloud data centers, Huawei is also providing its cloud operating system, called FusionSphere, its USG9500 series firewall, its S9700 switch, OceanStor Enterprise Storage, and modular data center IDS2000. As a result, Phoenix TV has achieved an about 20% decrease in construction cost and 60% increase in server utilization.

Venecia Liu, Research VP from Gartner, said, "In this digital era of disrupted convergence, media companies must transform their business models and adopt an omnimedia approach. Content needs to be distributed via multiple traditional and new media channels for viewers to access anywhere, at any time. The transformation towards omnimedia has boosted the development of ICT for the media industry, particularly with technology such as cloud computing, big data and the mobile Internet."

Huawei is dedicated to building consumer-centric ICT infrastructures for media customers to embrace opportunities brought about by omnimedia. Huawei's innovative ICT solutions today serve over 1000 media customers and 50,000 media workstations worldwide. Huawei's media customers include Phoenix TV, China Central Television, Shenzhen Media Group, IMG, Jordan Radio and Television Corporation, Rain Post, All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company, Illumination Entertainment, and Pinewood Studios, etc.
