We hope that the victim is still alive."
Palu, Central Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - Floods wreaked havoc in 16 villages in two sub-districts in Banggai District, Central Sulawesi Province, on Sunday, forcing some 15 thousand people to evacuate to safer places.

"They are now staying in emergency tents set up by the Banggai authorities," Bartholomeus Tandigala, the head of the Central Sulawesi Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD) stated here on Monday.

The flood-affected sub-districts are Toili and West Toili. Ten villages in Toili and six in West Toili were inundated.

The floodwaters, which reached a height of up to one meter, were triggered by incessant heavy rains over the areas since the past few days.

A villager went missing after being swept away by the currents of the floodwaters. Members of a local search and rescue team with the assistance of military and police officers are still looking for the missing person.

"We hope that the victim is still alive," Tandigala remarked.
