"Social problems and conflicts that arise between communities result in human victims who need immediate help. They are tended to by the PMI," Chief of the National Police Gen. Sutarman said here on Friday.
He pointed out that personnel of the PMI had been deployed to the conflict area in Papua to help the victims. The police protected the aiders there.
"Their top priority is to help the victims. However, when the victim is one of a bomb explosion, it requires a special procedure to be followed," Sutarman explained.
Furthermore, cooperation between the PMI and police is needed to help victims of traffic accidents as well.
Every year, as many as 30,000 to 40,000 people are reported as victims of traffic accidents.
"Traffic accident victims need immediate help from the PMI," he added.(*)
