Palembang, S Sumatra (ANTARA News) - The South Sumatra provincial police has discharged five officers for consuming and trafficking in drugs.

The five police officers comprising four first brigadiers and one brigadier were dishonorably discharged in an official ceremony at the South Sumatra provincial police station here on Thursday.

Chief of the South Sumatra provincial police Insp. Gen. Iza Fadri said the discharge reflected that his side was serious about eradicating drug trafficking.

As law enforcement officers, policemen must be clean from any criminal offenses including drug abuse, he said.

Furthermore, the provincial police had committed itself to clean South Sumatra from drug abuses in 2015 by upholding the law firmly, he said.

The discharge of the five police officers through an official ceremony was aimed at giving a deterrent effect to other police officers, he said.

By doing so, the other police officers would not be involved in drug abuse, he said.

Noting that drug trafficking had become cause for major concern, he asked his ranks and files to do their best to fight against drug trafficking.

On the occasion, the provincial police chief also presented awards to several officers for revealing drug cases in the province.
