Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Police Chief candidate Commissioner General Budi Gunawan will decide on his candidacy only after his pre-trial lawsuit against the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) ends, according to Acting Police Chief Commissioner General Badrodin Haiti.

A day after President Joko Widodo nominated the three-star police general as the sole candidate to replace police chief Gen. Sutarman, KPK accused him of involving in suspicious transactions.

"Yesterday, State Secretary Minister Pratikno urged Budi Gunawan to withdraw his candidacy. But, after our discussion with Budi, he said he will wait for the result of the pre-trial process and then make a decision," Badrodin said here on Wednesday.

According to Badrodin, if the pre-trial is held in a marathon session, it will take one week to finish.

After KPK named Budi a suspect on January 13, the National Police Headquarters filed a pre-trial suit against the anti-graft body.

Chief of the National Polices public relations division Inspector General Ronny F. Sompie stated that the police have decided to take a critical stand against the decision so as to protect their member through a legal channel.

Sompie also revealed that before filing the suit, the police had several discussions with law experts.(*)
