Solo, C.Java (ANTARA News) - Four countries are participating in the Indonesian Umbrella Festival (FPI) 2015, which is being held in Solo, Central Java province, on September 11-13.

Umbrella artists and craftsmen from Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, and China are participating in the event, Heru Mataya, a festival organizer, stated here on Thursday (September 10).

The FPI is themed "New Visual Artistic."

The participants will showcase their works through several programs such as an umbrella market, workshops, umbrella dance, solo dance festival, a carnival, and a seminar, as well as a moment of reflection under the umbrella of Indonesia, he noted.

Mataya explained that the presence of participants from foreign nations is aimed at improving the understanding about the umbrella culture among the participant countries.

"FPI also aims to preserve the umbrella culture of Indonesia and to help umbrella artists develop their works," he emphasized.

I feel immense pride to participate in the event and hope that the traditional umbrella culture will be preserved, Chen Mi, an umbrella craftsman from China, affirmed.

He added that the traditional umbrellas in China are now only used as souvenirs. If you want to use the traditional umbrellas today, they should have a modern touch, Mi added.

"Traditional Chinese umbrellas have been in use for the last 500 years. Now, modern style also needs to be incorporated into them," Mi remarked.
