The productivity of shrimp farms is shrinking."Kulon Progo (ANTARA News) - The Maritime, Fisheries and Animal Husbandry office of Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, said white feces disease (WFD) has attacked shrimp ponds resulting in a 17.27 percent fall in shrimp production from that district in 2015.
Head of the fishery and breeding division of the regional Marine, and Fishery office, Leo Handoko said the disease would shrimp to lose appetite and finally dead in 60 days.
"The productivity of shrimp farms is shrinking," Leo said here on Monday.
In 2015, the number of shrimp farmers increased to 315 with 677 ponds in Kulon Progo, up from 186 farmers with 426 ponds.
"In a bid to prevent further decline in production, farmers have to be more careful in maintaining good quality of water by removing the feces from pond bed," Leo said.
A farmer Riyanto in the village of Bugel said he had to harvest early to prevent bigger losses as operating cost of breeding is higher because of the disease.
