Every year, on November 10, Indonesian people honor their national heroes to commemorate the Battle of Surabaya on November 10, 1945, that was fought during the Indonesian National Revolution.
The battle of Surabaya was one of the most important battles of the war as it helped galvanize international support for the independence of Indonesia.
"Everyone can be a hero, with the criteria that he or she can properly fulfill his or her duties, profession, and life in any field he or she is involved in," Kalla remarked here on Tuesday.
The vice president noted that to this end, time also played an important role. In current times, he said that for being a hero, one does not have to go to war or battle but rather to work on areas that can have a positive influence on the community.
"In 1945, the heroes were those individuals who struggled and fought with weapons. But, today, if we struggle and fight with weapons, we will, of course, be branded as terrorists. Thus, individuals who strive to positively influence the public without the use of arms are called heroes," he affirmed.
The vice president also highlighted the role of journalists as heroes of the nation to provide the public with information.
"For the journalists, if they can create reports to have a positive influence on the public and to encourage, motivate, and inspire the community, then they are also heroes in the field they are involved in," Kalla emphasized.(*)
