Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto announced on Tuesday that the government aims to develop 66 new hospitals in Indonesia’s outermost and underdeveloped regions by the end of 2026.

According to the President, The Ministry of Health has already established 30 new hospitals across various regions this year, with another 30 planned for development next year.

“By the end of next year, we will have 66 new hospitals in remote areas where proper healthcare facilities have yet to be built—such as in Tobelo, Anambas, and Taliabu,” Prabowo stated while inaugurating the Mahar Mardjono National Brain Hospital on Tuesday.

He referred specifically to Tobelo in North Halmahera District, North Maluku; the Anambas Islands in Riau Islands Province, which share a maritime border with Malaysia; and Taliabu Island in North Maluku.

In addition to the 66 hospitals planned for frontier regions, President Prabowo pledged to develop up to 500 high-quality hospitals—one in each Indonesian district—within the next four years.

“Five hundred quality hospitals must be established in all Indonesian districts,” the President told Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin during the event.

He emphasized that quality hospitals in every district would enable timely treatment and improve recovery rates for conditions such as stroke.

“If someone is treated within three hours of a stroke, they can recover. But if it takes more than five hours, the therapy will be longer and the burden on the family greater,” he said.

“We have the resources—we must manage them well,” the President added, expressing confidence in achieving the 500-hospital target within the designated timeframe.

President Prabowo also praised the newly inaugurated Mahar Mardjono National Brain Hospital, expressing hope that it would serve not only as a medical facility but also as a center for healthcare education.

He envisioned the hospital as a center of excellence for other educational and research institutions, particularly those focused on neurological science.

“I understand that the United States’ National Institutes of Health has a representative at this hospital and is involved in research here. We should be proud that our efforts have reached a global standard,” Prabowo remarked.
