Surabaya, E Java (ANTARA News) - Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini has conferred 40 awards on senior high school and vocational school principals, early childhood education program (PAUD) teachers and students who read the most books, for their achievements.
"I should like to express my gratitude to teachers for having done their best for our children," she said at a function marking the National Education Day and the 20th Regional Autonomy Day here on Monday.
Winners of library contests at elementary, junior and senior high school levels, winners of story- telling contest and winners of sports week at elementary school level were also among those who received the awards.
She said the teachers had dedicated themselves to the education of Indonesian children and, therefore, they deserved a token of appreciation.
The mayor further reminded students in Surabaya of the need to prepare themselves mentally for competition in the era of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).
It is important for students in the city not to easily give up in the face of the competition at the global level, she said.
"You must not easily start feeling as if you are helpless. You must win the competition. You must be winners, not only at local but also at global levels," she said.(*)
