Jakarta (ANTARA) - Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq revealed that the investment required to achieve a total waste management by 2029 will reach approximately Rp300 trillion, including the transformation of open dumping landfills (TPA).

"We have projected the investment, and then modeled it, and it will require nearly US$20 to 21 billion, or Rp 300 trillion," said the Environment Minister/Head of the Environmental Management Agency (BPLH) at a multi-stakeholder consolidation meeting to formulate strategic steps following INC-5.2 in Jakarta on Thursday.

This investment is necessary to achieve 100 percent waste management by 2029, including for plastic waste, in accordance with the government's target set out in the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN).

This investment includes transforming 343 landfills that still use open dumping systems, or openly storing waste without management, into controlled landfills or sanitary landfills.

It is also projected that Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) and waste-to-energy power plants (PLTSa) will be built in 33 cities, as well as 250 integrated waste processing facilities (TPST) and 42,000 Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (TPS3R) facilities.

Nurofiq emphasized that this figure represents the investment potential for building a circular economy in Indonesia. However, it also presents a major burden if waste management is viewed solely as an expenditure.

Funding remains a key challenge for the government, especially amid the lack of agreement on the Global Plastics Agreement at the INC-5.2 meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland, in early August.

He noted that while Indonesia awaits multilateral consensus, bilateral agreements should be strengthened.

"Support from developed countries in the form of technology, investment, capacity building, knowledge transfer, and funding is certainly essential," he added.
