Chinese tourists are willing to spend money in Australia, which apparently improve the local economy. According to the data recently published by Tourism Research Australia (TRA), the purchase volume generated by Chinese tourists in Australia last year was AU$ 6.2 billion, increasing by nearly 7 times over last 10 years.
Against this background, more and more Australian merchants accept UnionPay card as a way to attract tourists. At present, 80% of local ATMs and 50% of local merchants accept UnionPay card, covering the places frequently visited by tourists. Data from Australian Bureau of Statistics shows the number of Chinese tourists travelling to Australia in 2015 exceeds 1 million for the first time. By 2020, this number will increase to 1.4 million, ranking the first in the source countries of Australia.
