The DPR leadership will hold a meeting to discuss the issue and the decision will be taken at a plenary meeting on June 28.Jakarta (ANTARA News) - House Speaker Ade Komarudin has said the House of Representatives (DPR) has received a letter from President Joko Widodo, proposing Senior Commissioner Tito Karnavian as candidate to be a police chief.
"The DPR has received a letter from President Joko Widodo about the candidacy of Senior Commissioner Tito Karnavian as the sole police chief candidate to succeed General Badrodin Haiti," Komarudin said here on Wednesday.
The DPR leadership will hold a meeting to discuss the issue and the decision will be taken at a plenary meeting on June 28.
The Commission III will also carry out a fit and proper test about the candidate on June 22.
Chairman of the Commission III Bambang Soesatyo said the letter will be submitted to the DPRs Consultative Council (Bamus) on June 16.
Johan Budi, the presidential special staff, confirmed that President Joko Widodo has proposed the name of Commissioner General Tito Karnavian, currently chairman of the National Counter-Terrorism Agency, as a candidate for the post of police chief.
The head of state has sent a letter containing the name of the candidate for the post of police chief to the DPR on June 15.
"The president has complete authority to nominate the national police chief candidate. It is his prerogative," he emphasized.
However, before selecting Karnavian, the president had sought inputs from various parties, including the National Police Commission (Kompolnas), the Police chief and the public, Budi remarked.
Karnavian was selected for the post to enhance a sense of professionalism and the quality of the legal enforcement process, particularly to tackle extraordinary crimes, such as terrorism, drug trafficking, and corruption, he noted.
Besides this, the national police is also expected to have more synergy with other law enforcement agencies.
The current police chief, General Badrodin Haiti, will enter retirement period in July 2016. (*)
