Manado (ANTARA News) - As many as 61 countries, including Indonesia, are participating in a consultative meeting on the sustainable management of coral reefs being held in Manado, North Sulawesi Province.

"The meeting will be held for two days on June 28-29, and 61 countries will participate in it," Director General on Sea Management at the Maritime and Fisheries Ministry Brahmantya Satyamurti Poerwali stated here on Tuesday.

Poerwali noted that the delegations participating in the first day were from countries, such as Indonesia, Grenada, Eritrea, Fiji, Maldives, Madagascar, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Somalia, Seychelles, the Philippines, and Antigua in addition to the representatives of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as well as members of the Coral Triangle Initiative.

According to Poerwali, during the two days, the participants will hold discussions on taking further actions and on implementing resolutions related to the sustainable management of coral reefs.

Poerwali noted that the delegations will be chalking out a priority action plan to be implemented by UNEP.

The meeting will discuss other agendas, such as identifying technical, operational, and financial needs of participating countries in implementing coral reef resolutions.

Poerwali explained that the meeting was a follow up to the second United Nations general assembly on environment, which was held in May 2016.

The participants will also discuss Indonesias coral reef recovery and preservation efforts.
