Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesias state-owned seaport operator Pelindo 1 and a Spanish seaport company inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on July 11, 2016, in Valencia, Spain, according to a press statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Madrid.

According to the statement received by ANTARA here, Thursday, the MoU was signed by President Director of Pelindo 1 Bambang Eka Cahyana, President Director of PT Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia Rudiyanto, CEO of Fundacion Valencia Port Aurelio Martinez Estevez, and Director of Internasional Societe Generale de Surveillance SA (SGS) Roger Kamgaing.

The cooperation covers vessel traffic monitoring system and port communication systems, digitization of seaport information, and the management of seaport terminal operations, and seaport safety system.

Marsetio, an advisor to the coordinating minister for maritime affairs and concurrently chairman of the Indonesian delegation, remarked that the government was currently giving special attention to the maritime sector for developing seaport infrastructure.

"The development of 34 seaports across Indonesia requires the support and cooperation of various parties," he emphasized.

The Indonesian government has urged the Authority of Valencia Port and SGS to review the capacity of seaports, which come under the authority of Pelindo 1, in order to determine the scope of cooperation.

The improvement in seaport services has become the focus of development, including improving infrastructure at cargo and passenger terminals.

Indonesia is also planning to build modern seaports, which will be equipped with a digital communication system to serve ships and cargo as well as to manage the flow of passengers in line with international standards.

According to the president director of Pelindo 1, several seaports, under the authority of the company, will face tough competition at the national, regional, and international levels.

He explained that following the development of the Kuala Tanjung seaport, it will become the biggest in Indonesia.

The first phase of the construction of the multi-function terminal will be completed by 2017, followed by the construction of an industrial gateway port that is expected to become operational by 2019.

The seaport will accommodate 150 million tons of cargo and will create at least one hundred thousand jobs and open an investment of some US$7 billion.(*)
