Together with local people, we continue to monitor and take care of the nests not to be disturbed and eaten by those wild animals."Manokwari (ANTARA News) - World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Indonesia and Tambrauw district administration, West Papua province, are preparing an establishment of nesting coastal park in the region.
The WWF Indonesia Coordinator for Marine Morphology of West Papua, Imam Suhada, here said the local government has provided a land area of 3,200 hectares in Abun sub district, Tambrauw.
He said the coastal park stretches from Jamursmbamedi coast to Warmon Abun coast.
During this time, the site has become nesting location dominated by leatherback sea turtles, the biggest turtle in the world.
He explained in addition to leatherback sea turtle, several species of turtle like olive ridley turtles, green turtles and hawksbill turtles also lay their eggs on the beach.
Suhada said the turtle population in various regions in Indonesia is on the brink of extinction.
On Abun beach, the threats come from wild animals such as lizards, dogs and wild boars.
