Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Jakarta administration is planning to set up a community-based team of disaster standby volunteers, acting Jakarta Governor Sumarsono said.

The team will be tasked with conducting mitigation efforts, particularly to increase public awareness and preparedness to face any disaster, he said at the City Hall here on Friday.

"We will give technical guidance to the volunteers in such a way that they will be able to perform their duties to impart knowledge and understanding to the community in the area where they live," he said.

The team of disaster standby volunteers is needed as Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia and the center of all activities and that disaster mitigation is high on the list of priorities, he said.

"Disaster can happen anytime. It is unpredictable. Therefore, disaster mitigation must become our responsibility," he said.

In performing their duties, the team will be divided into three groups. The first group will be responsible for areas, which have the high risk of disaster, the second group for areas, which pose a medium risk of disaster, and the third group will be for areas that have face a small risk of disaster, he said.

"Our priority is to give technical guidance to volunteers belonging to the first group," Governor Sumarsono said.(*)
