Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The government of Luxembourg has stated its support for Indonesias candidacy as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said here on Tuesday after holding a meeting with her Luxembourg counterpart Jean Asselborn.

"Luxembourg has agreed to support the nomination of Indonesia as the non-permanent member of the UNSC for the period of 2019-2020," she stated.

As a mutual support, Indonesia will support Luxembourg to also be a non-permanent member of the UNSC for the period of 2031-2032.

In addition to the Permanent Five, UNSC has 10 representative countries from five regions as non-permanent members with two-year term of office.

From the Asia Pacific, Indonesia will compete with Maldives for the seats which are currently occupied by Japan and Malaysia.

The election of the UNSCs non-permanent members will take place in June 2018. The Indonesian government is optimistic that it can lead Indonesia to a non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council.

Marsudi recently stated that Indonesias chances of becoming a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council are considerable.

"The support is enough with more than 100 countries, and the potential is huge," he noted. (*)
