Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) inaugurated Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto as a new chief of the National Defense Forces (TNI) at the State Palace here on Friday.

Marshal Hadi replaced General Gatot Nurmantyo who will retire in April 1, 2018.

President Jokowi proposed the nomination of Marshal Hadi for the post of TNI chief to the House of Representatives (DPR) through a letter dated Nov 4.

After receiving the letter, the DPR later held a meeting of DPR leadership and a meeting of the DPR Consultative Board.

The DPR leadership then handed over the latter to the House Commission I which later conducted a fit and proper test on Marshal Hadi on Nov 6.

The House Commission I endorsed the nomination of Marshal Hadi for the post of TNI chief based on his credible track record.

Before assuming the post of TNI chief, Marshal Hadi was air force chief of staff, inspector general of the Defense Ministry, the president`s military secretary, commander of Abdulrachman Saleh airbase in Malang, chief of the Air Force`s information service, and commander of Adi Sumarmo airbase in Solo.

Hadi graduated from the Air Force Academy in Yogyakarta in 1986 and the Air Force aviation school in 1987.
