Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry said here on Thursday that technological developments such as artificial intelligence (AI) can support the advancement of education at the university level.

The ministry's director general of higher education, research, and technology, Abdul Haris, said that AI development at universities would provide ease of learning to students and offer solutions to learning challenges.

"We hope that the higher education level can be supported by the rapid development of technology that can provide solutions and convenience for students to learn better," he said at the "Leading Effective Integration of GenAI in Higher Education" event.

Universities are now required to carry out digital transformation of their learning systems so that they no longer use traditional models, but switch to digital-based education, he explained.

Haris noted that AI is currently being used widely in the world of education, for instance, teaching and learning resources can be generated by AI and evaluation or assessment can be carried out using AI.

It can also help lecturers in their administrative work, he said.

"There are so many benefits. For research it is Mendeley. It is the simplest but the most useful," he added.

Another AI technology is ChatGPT, which works in a conversation format.

Students usually ask questions to their teacher in class, but now, they can ask ChatGPT questions and get prompt answers.

However, Haris said that the advancement of AI can also be a threat to the education sector if there are no adequate regulations related to its implementation.

"We must supervise its utilization to prevent it from becoming damaging. If not (controlled) there will be a lot of harm, I think we must regulate this," he added.
