Their meeting at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Friday served as a precursor to more detailed and technical talks.
During a joint press conference, President Prabowo expressed hope that the upcoming meeting in July would mark progress in resolving longstanding issues between the two nations.
“We will hold an annual meeting in July, which we hope can serve as momentum for the technical resolution of several issues,” he said.
Prime Minister Anwar described his visit as “actually unofficial,” saying it was aimed at addressing both current and bilateral matters.
Earlier on Friday, President Prabowo welcomed Anwar at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta. The two then traveled together to Merdeka Palace, where they held a private meeting lasting nearly an hour.
The leaders discussed various topics, including maritime and land border negotiations, trade, investment, and education. They also agreed to establish a joint development authority in border areas, particularly the Ambalat sea block.
Regional matters were also addressed, including follow-ups on the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit, and the ASEAN-China Summit.
Security concerns were another focus of the talks, with discussions covering the conflict in Myanmar and the Thailand-Cambodia border dispute.
Prabowo and Anwar also exchanged views on global issues, notably the Israel-Iran war and the humanitarian crisis resulting from the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
