At a press conference held in Jakarta on Tuesday, KPAI`s Child Trafficking and Exploitation Commissioner Ai Maryati Solihah noted that of the total figure, eight cases were of child trafficking, 13 of commercial sexual exploitation of children, nine of child victims of prostitution, and two cases of child victims of economic exploitation.
"This figure is snowballing based on data collected from the National Police`s Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) on trafficking in persons during the 2011-2017 period," she noted.
Data from Bareskrim indicated 422 cases of child trafficking during the 2011-2017 period, with the modus operandi mostly being sexual exploitation.
Similarly, the International Organization for Migration data indicated that during the period between 2005 and 2017, some 8,876 victims of trafficking were reported, with 15 percent, or as many as 1,155 being children.
"In the last three months, cases of trafficking and exploitation targeting minors reveal the complexity of cases that necessitate concern," Solihah said.
According to Solihah, a new modus operandi in human trafficking and exploitation is targeting children to drive them into prostitution and exploit them for economic benefits.
"Children take up bad jobs to fake internship programs abroad," she added.
