However, trade between the two countries is still relatively small, reaching US$1.7 billion per year".Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has encouraged the government to enhance bilateral cooperation with Mexico particularly in the fields of trade and tourism.
"Indonesia and Mexico have established bilateral cooperation since 65 years ago. However, trade between the two countries is still relatively small, reaching US$1.7 billion per year," Deputy Chief of DPR`s Inter-parliamentary Cooperation Board (BKSAP) Juliari Batubara said at the parliament building here on Thursday.
Juliari made the statement after a BKSAP team paid a week-long working visit to Mexico from April 14 to 20 this year.
The BKSAP team led by Juliari Batubara comprised Nurhayati Monoarfa of the United Development Party (FPPP) faction, Deny Maryadi Oekon of the Idonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, Bara K Hasibuan of the National Mandate Party, and Abdul Kadir Karding of the Mation Awakening Party (FPKB).
Juliari said Indonesia and Mexico have many things in common and have established bilateral cooperation during the term of office of President Sukarno.
Mexico is one of new emerging economies in Latin America and has large economic potentials, he said.
As a member of North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Mexico has good relations with the US particularly in the trade field.
"Indonesia can benefit from close relations between Mexico and the US to export its key commodities, such as crude palm oil (CPO)," he said.
