Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Five police officers and one terror convict were killed in a riot at the detention center of Mobile Brigade (Brimob) Command Station in Kelapa Dua, Depok, West Java, on Tuesday night, the National Police Headquarters said.

"All the bodies have been taken to the National Police Hospital," Chief of the Public Information Bureau at the National Police Headquarters, Brigadier General M Iqbal, stated on Wednesday.

Iqbal noted that one police officer is being held hostage by the terror convicts, and the police are negotiating with them to release him.

By Wednesday, the situation at the detention center would be brought under control, with the help of security officers blockading the detention block where the riot broke out.

Iqbal appealed to all components of the community to avoid exaggerating the incident, as it might cause the terrorists to frighten the public.

He added that the riot broke out when several terror convicts, occupying a number of detention blocks, quarreled with police officers over food.

"This is a matter of the police`s standard operating procedure to check the food for anyone held in custody," he explained.

The food for inmates at the Bribom Command Station`s detention center must be sterilized and must not contain forbidden materials, he revealed.
