Semarang, Central Java (ANTARA News) - Indonesia needs to prioritize the security of personal data similar to that in other countries in Europe, according to cybersecurity expert Dr Pratama Persadha.

As confirmed by Antara here on Tuesday, Persadha remarked that Europe has implemented the General Data Protection Regulation, as this legal instrument has been applicable worldwide since May 25, 2018.

He stated that effects of the regulation were wide-ranging since every service or application that collects and processes data belonging to 28 EU countries is under penalty of 20 million euros, or four percent of the total annual turnover.

Persadha, chairman of the Communication and Information System Security Research Center, affirmed that Indonesia needs to observe the EU`s seriousness in protecting the privacy of its citizens.

"I think the same can be applicable in Indonesia, although it should not be similar, so that businesspersons as well as government agencies that collect and process community data can protect it from being abused," he noted.

He explained that the General Data Protection Regulation aims to enable EU citizens to have complete control over their personal data, so that every service or application must offer special features for EU citizens to check and also delete their own data.

He said several deviations still exist in Indonesia. Customer banking data, for instance, can be traded. Despite perpetrators being arrested several times, the problem remains unresolved.

"The main problem is the lack of legislation related to the protection of personal data as well as making it mandatory for all business and state entities to seriously build a pro system on securing personal data," he stated.

Moreover, he pointed to the increasing use of personal data in everyday life. With massive developments in technology, almost all "online" services make it compulsory to input personal data before it can be used and also gaming services.

He said some countries use KYC, or Know Your Customer, in e-Commerce transactions. This compels users and entrepreneurs to use their genuine identities in electronic transactions.
