Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo has said the government is trying to accelerate the settlement of past human rights cases and to improve the protection of human rights in the country to prevent a repeat of violations.

"We must pay great attention to efforts to respect, protect, fulfill and enforce human rights in the country," the president noted in his annual state of the nation address to Parliament here on Thursday, prior to the celebration of Indonesia`s 73rd Independence Day on August 17.

The president pointed out that efforts to uphold human rights have become the government`s priority in improving the National Action Plan on Human Rights.

The government has issued Presidential Regulation No.33 of 2018 on Amendments to Presidential Regulation No.75 of 2015 on the National Action Plan on Human Rights for 2015-2019.

"In an effort to achieve progress in improving the protection of human rights in the country, we need to be courageous. We must have the determination to make decisions that are in the best interests of the Indonesian people," Jokowi stated.

The 2018 annual meeting between the government and the parliament was also attended by Vice President Jusuf Kalla; state officials; the current cabinet ministers; foreign representatives; two of Indonesia`s former presidents, Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie and Megawati Sukarnoputri; and two former vice presidents, Try Sutrisno and Boediono.
