Jakarta (Antara - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has expressed great pride that Indonesian female taekwondo athlete Defia Rosmaniar won the first gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games.

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art, characterized by its emphasis on head-height kicks.

On his official twitter account @jokowi on Sunday around 7:00 p.m. Western Indonesia Standard Time (WIB), President Jokowi gave a special congratulation to Defia.

"Congratulations to Defia Rosmaniar, a female taekwondo athlete who won the first gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games for Indonesia," the head of state remarked.

Even the president also witnessed the match between Defia and Iranian Taekwondo athlete Marjan Salahshouri.

"I directly witnessed Defia defeating Marjan Salahshouri from Iran at the Plenary Hall of Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) this evening," Jokowi added.

The gold medal by the Indonesian female taekwondo athlete made the president proud, and optimistic that other athletes from the country will make their best achievements.

"Again, congratulations to Defia and the coaches. The Indonesian people are proud of you," President Jokowi twitted.

Previously, the head of state also conveyed his congratulation through his twitter account to Indonesian male wushu athlete Edgar Xavier Marvelo who successfully won a silver medal on Sunday morning.
