"Regional governments must actively promote disaster mitigation in line with the potential for disasters in the area. This is to minimize potential losses, both material and potential loss of life," he pointed out.
He said that efforts to minimize the impact of disasters, including increasing mitigation outreach to the community, are the responsibility of local governments.
Potential disasters can be detected, but the time when they would occur cannot be ascertained, so preparedness is very important, he added.
"Most natural disasters in Indonesia occur repeatedly, such as landslides, floods, and eruptions. Each region should be better prepared for handling disasters, in line with its existing potential," he said.
Meanwhile, West Sumatra Governor Mahyeldi said that his government, as well as the district and city governments, are continuing to carry out massive disaster mitigation outreach.
Socialization is also being carried out through the installation of signposts in disaster-prone zones.
This is being done to increase public awareness of disaster risks in West Sumatra, especially where residents live, he said.
"In West Sumatra, we have many potential disasters, starting from earthquakes, tsunamis, the eruption of Mount Marapi, floods, landslides, and also cold lava floods," he noted.
He urged the regional governments and the community to help each other, with the governments continuing to provide mitigation outreach while the community is expected to understand the potential for disasters and remain alert.
