Tanjungpinang, Riau Islands, (ANTARA News) - The Lingga district administration of Riau Islands said it plans to build the country`s first beet sugar factory.

Secretary of the Lingga District Administration Juramadi Esram said the Central Government will build the infrastructure of the factory which will be operated by the District Administration Company (BUMD).

"The beet sugar factory in Lingga would be the first and only one in Indonesia, supported by the Central Government with foreign technology. Beet sugar industry has been developed in Germany," Juramadi said here on Monday.

He said he is optimistic that business in beet sugar industry would expand as beet grows well in Lingga, and beet sugar would be high in demand as it has low hydro carbonate content.

Many people especially adult ones tend to avoid consuming much sugar to prevent diabetic disease.

"Most sugar in the country is produced from sugarcane as the raw material which has high carbohydrate content. Now we want to produce sugar with low content of carbohydrate with relatively cheap price," Juramadi said.

He said Lingga has wide land to grow beet plant, adding the project will not only contribute to regional income but would open new jobs for local people.

"Surplus in production could easily be exported to Singapore and Malaysia," he said.
