Jakarta, Sept 12 (ANTARA News) - The number of Indonesian scientific publications, in the form of journal and conference proceedings, recorded in Scopus indexed journals increased substantially in 2017-2018, Research, Technology, and Higher Education Ministry`s Secretary General, Prof. Ainun Na`im stated.

This was conveyed at the opening of the National Conference on Research and Community Service in Communication Studies held recently by the London School of Public Relations Jakarta, according to a statement received by Antara here, Wednesday.

According to Prof. Na`im, Ph.D, various challenges and problems related to research and development in science and technology in Indonesia could be overcome through a fundamental regulatory reform, so it can produce research that is beneficial for the people.

So far, there are 215 journals on language and communication studies in Indonesia that contain more than 21,967 papers.

Meanwhile, Chair Organizer of the National Conference on Research and Community Service in Communication Studies Dr Lestari Nurhajati stated that the conference was a synergy among the government, businesspersons, practitioners, and academics.

"I hope this conference will be able to build synergies to create research-based community service and provide an understanding in communication studies," she stated.

The conference has selected 40 best papers, of which eight will be published in national journals, while 32 other papers will be published in online journals, with the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN).

On the meantime, 126 other scientific articles will be published through the conference proceeding, also having an ISSN.

Scopus is one of the citation indexes for scientific journals, in addition to Copernicus, ProQuest, Thomson Reuters, and Microsoft Academic Search.

The Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education has issued Ministerial Regulation Number 20 of 2017 on provision of professional allowances for lecturers and honorary allowances for professors as a commitment to encouraging academicians to write international publications in reputable journals.

During the last two years, the policy has had an impact on the number of Indonesian international publications. Currently, Indonesia ranks third in Southeast Asia, after Malaysia and Singapore, in terms of the number of scientific publications, reaching 15,419 at the end of 2017.

Science and technology research and development in Indonesia still faces numerous challenges, such as the small number of researchers, reaching 1,071 per one million population.

In addition, the research budget is mostly from the government, and the research results are less relevant to the market needs.
