Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - Yogyakarta City will host the 2018 Guppy International Festival on Nov 3-4 that is expected to be the biggest event of its kind in the world.

Chairman of the 2018 Guppy International Festival Singgih Setiarso stated here, Thursday, that the festival will be organized by the Indonesian Guppy Popularize Association (IGPA) of Yogyakarta in Ngasem Plaza, Yogyakarta, and bring together guppy hobbyists from across the world.

"This festival will also introduce Yogyakarta`s cultures to the guppy fish community," Setiarso stated.

According to Setiarso, the festival will introduce a new format of guppy fish contest that has not been carried out by any other guppy fish community in the world.

At this festival, IGPA Yogyakarta will display the best guppies from around the world at the event.

At this event, all guppy lovers and hobbyists can participate in several programs that have never featured in any guppy fish contest events. The programs are business forums, buyers and breeders, as well as exhibitions, and guppy fish contests, with a total prize of US$2,500.

Acting Head of the Yogyakarta City Tourism Office Yunianto Dwisutono expressed hope that the festival would be a starting point for improving the quality of guppy fish produced by Indonesian breeders.

According to Dwisutono, the festival highlighted the historical and cultural values of Yogyakarta, one of which is indicated by Ngasem Plaza Yogyakarta as the event`s venue.

Plaza Ngasem, located at the Taman Sari complex, is one of the legendary tourist sites in Yogyakarta.

Plaza Ngasem, formerly known as Pasar Ngasem, is a traditional market in Yogyakarta that specializes in the sale of pets.

Meanwhile, IGPA Chairman Akhmad Taufik Shaleh noted that "gunungan" had been selected as the icon for the Guppy International Festival 2018 that has philosophical values.

Gunungan is a form of Javanese shadow puppet that depicts basic philosophy about life and nature. It portrays trees, animals, and other living creatures.

"This is the spirit of the 2018 Guppy International Festival as a starting point to make Indonesia one of the world`s guppy centers," Shaleh added.
