Kalla made the statement in his speech at the general debate session of the 73rd UN General Assembly at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, the United States, on Thursday afternoon local time.
He noted that world peace faces increasingly complex global challenges, with instability in political and economic conditions, conflicts that are still rampant, extreme poverty, and inequality.
"However, the world does not need to look far for superheroes. We do not need to ask for the power of the Avengers or Justice League. Collectively, we have the power of superheroes. All we have to do is to make use of our will, courage, strength, selflessness, compassion, and humility," the Indonesian vice president noted.
Furthermore, Kalla stated that joint leadership was at the core of the United Nations.
"Where we all believe in the power and strength of the mantra in the UN Charter, we are the nation of the United Nations," he remarked.
The vice president lauded the theme brought to the 73rd UN General Assembly this time, "Making the United Nations Relevant to All Nations: Global Leadership and Sharing Responsibility for Peace, Equality and Sustainable Communities."
"This year`s theme appropriately captures what is needed to be carried out by all parties, as a community of nations, a community of leaders," the Indonesian vice president stated.
Kalla began his speech by expressing sympathy for the former UN secretary general Kofi Anan, who had died on August 18, 2018.
"The world has lost its peacemaker and a true humanist. We will always remember his inheritance," he noted.
