Tasikmalaya, W. Java (ANTARA News) - Vice presidential candidate Ma`ruf Amin cited the World Health Organization (WHO) as saying that one can be categorized as an old person if he or she is aged 80-100 years.

Based on the category, Amin, who is now 75 years of age, claimed that he can be categorized as a middle-aged rather than an old man.

"According to the WHO, an old person is aged between 80 and 100 years. A person aged between 60 and 80 years is of middle age. It means that I am not old yet but middle aged," Amin noted at an informal gathering of Islamic boarding school administrators in the Cipasung Islamic boarding school in Tasikmalaya on Monday.

He noted that as compared to Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad, who is now 93 years old, he is still much younger.

Amin reiterated that he agreed to run in the vice presidential race to prepare a firm basis for the next generations.

He recalled a story of an old man when he studied at an Islamic boarding school.

"I remember a story of an old man, who planted a tree. Someone asked why he planted the tree when he could not reap the yield. The old man answered I plant this tree not for me but for the next generation," Amin stated.

Amin joined incumbent President Joko Widodo to compete with Prabowo Subianto and his partner Sandiaga Uno in the April 2019 election.
