Nusa Dua, Bali (ANTARA News) - Indonesia has committed to enhance cooperation with the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) member countries, Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi said.

The minister shared the commitment in a meeting with MSG Director General Ambassador, Amena Yauvoli, on the sideline of the Our Ocean Conference (OOC) 2018 held here on Tuesday.

"In a meeting with Yauvoli, I have shared Indonesia`s commitment to enhance cooperation with MSG member countries," the minister noted.

Yauvoli has expressed his appreciation for Indonesian contribution for MSG countries, including the capacity building program for the Pacific islands states.

"We have conducted the capacity building program regarding fishery sector for Pacific countries," Marsudi remarked.

According to Marsudi, the participation of Palau President, Thomas E. Remengesau, and Nauru President, Baron Waqa, at the OOC 2018, hosted by Indonesia, have shown its closer ties with the south Pacific countries.

"The attendance of Palau president as well as Nauru president in the OOC has shown a new relationship between Indonesia and the south Pacific countries," she added.

On Indonesia`s status as associate member in the MSG, Marsudi revealed that the government has highly respected the good relations with Melanesian countries.

"Regarding membership in MSG, the important thing for us is Indonesia`s contribution to the MSG," she pointed out.
