Jakarta (ANTARA News)- Vice President M Jusuf Kalla led a ceremony to commemorate Heroes` Day at the Kalibata heroes` cemetery, here, Saturday.

Kalla and his spouse, Mufia Jusuf, arrived at the cemetery at 7:55 a.m. local time.

The Vice President acted as the inspector of ceremony, with Colonel Rizayan as the commander of ceremony.

The function was attended by military officers, civilians and veterans.

After praying for fallen heroes, Kalla laid a wreath at the Kalibata monument to national heroes.

Among ministers attending the ceremony were Education and Culture Minister Muhadjir Effendy, Village, Backward Region Development and Transmigration Minister Eko Putro Sandjojo, and Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Pandjaitan.

Among fallen heroes buried at Kalibata Heroes` cemetery are Gen Ahmad Yani, Lt Gen R Suprapto, Lt Gen S Parman, Lt Gen MT Haryono, Gen AH Nasution, Major Gen Sutoyo Siswiharjo, Adam Malik, Lt Gen H Shoerdarmono, and Umar Wirahadikusumah.

On 10 November, Indonesia celebrates Heroes Day in remembrance of the Battle of Surabaya which started on that very date in the year 1945.

The battle took place as Indonesians refused to surrender their weaponry to British army which was part of the Allied forces then. The defiant Bung Tomo is the well-known revolutionary leader who played a pivotal role in this battle.
