Surabaya, E Java (ANTARA News) - Urban forest is necessary to help curb flooding and pollution, according to Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini.

The urban forest developed in Warugunung, Karang Pilang Sub-district, Surabaya, can also strengthen the soil structure, so it can minimize the impacts of earthquake, she noted here on Saturday.

Rismaharini called on Surabaya`s inhabitants to not harbor concerns over information on two active faults passing through Surabaya, as the Surabaya municipality administration had taken precautionary measures to minimize the impacts.

A small reservoir will also be built at the location to hold the rainwater, and plenty of trees, mostly the fruit-bearing varieties, will be planted around the small reservoir.

The mayor remarked that several other urban forests will be created in the second-largest city in Indonesia.

At least one thousand trees were planted in the new urban forest.
