Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Directorate General of Land Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation said that the number of passengers using Merak-Bakauheni ferry transportation dropped drastically after the tsunami hit Banten and South Lampung regions.

Director General of Land Transportation of the Transportation Ministry Budi Setiyadi at a press conference in Jakarta, Wednesday (26/12), said the peak of passenger surges occurred on December 21-22 2018, reaching some 50 thousand people and 10 thousand vehicles per day, compared to 25 thousand people and some five thousand vehicles in normal days.

"December 21-22 experienced a peak, the increase was very high, from 25 thousand passengers to 50 thousand, but due to tsunami, the number has dropped until at present," said Budi.

According to the 2018 Christmas Transport Data Recapitulation, the Ministry of Transportation recorded 51,834 passengers on December 21, 2018 and 66,897 passengers on December 22, 2018.

However, due to the tsunami that struck on Saturday (12/22) night, the number of passengers dropped drastically to 36,585 people on December 23, 2018 and 31,241 people on December 24, 2018.
