Jakarta, (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo has called on the police to take stern measures against those attempting to discredit the General Election Commission (KPU).

"Security personnel should not allow any activity aiming to weaken or discredit the KPU," President Joko Widodo, or commonly known as Jokowi, stated after installing Lt Gen. Doni Monardo as chief of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency at the State Palace here on Wednesday.

Jokowi has called on all parties to support the commission in carrying out its tasks and upholding its authority as organizer of the regional, legislative, and presidential elections.

"Hence, I told the police chief to take stern measures against people and certain parties attempting to discredit (the commission)," Jokowi reiterated.

Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo had earlier labeled those intending to discredit the KPU as political criminals.

"I believe that the party`s cadres, contestant parties, success team, and presidential candidates do not want to discredit the KPU, as the organizer of the elections. If there are any parties, we can call them political criminals, whoever they are," Kumolo emphasized.

Those attempting to disrupt the process of democracy in Indonesia and distract the work of political parties and presidential candidates and their success teams deserve to be called political criminals. Hence, the police should investigate them.

He also called on the public to pose their queries or doubts pertaining to the implementation of the general elections to the KPU, through political parties or the candidates` success team.
