AntaraJakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has encouraged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in issuing a press release to condemn the acts of terrorism at Masjid Al Noor and Masjid Linwood in Christchurch, New Zealand.
The press release was initiated by Indonesia and agreed by the forum only a few hours following the attack, as noted in a written statement issued by Indonesia's permanent representative to the United Nations in New York and received here on Tuesday.
The statement by UNSC was issued on Mar 15, or on the same day when the attack occurred, claiming 50 lives and injuring tens of other victims. Indonesian diplomats in New York have managed to convince other members of the UNSC to affirm the press release.
"I have spoken to the permanent representative of New Zealand in New York to express our deep condolences and to deliver Indonesia's initiative on the press release," Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the United Nations in New York Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani noted.
Through the release, also sponsored by Kuwait, the UNSC affirms that any form of terrorism poses a serious threat to international peace, security, and the UNSC, and the council asserts the urgency for the perpetrators to be held responsible for their actions according to the prevailing laws.
The UNSC release complements its previous statements initiated by Indonesia, including those on terror attacks in Afghanistan and the Philippines in January 2019, and in Iran, in mid-February of 2019.
"Numerous countries praised Indonesia's initiative to lay emphasis on the issue of UNSC issuing a press release in an attempt to express the council’s sympathies and condolences to the family of victims and to the New Zealand government," Ambassador Djani stated.
