AntaraSumenep, East Java (ANTARA) - An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 hit at 8:22 a.m. local time in Sumenep District, Madura Island, East Java Province, on Tuesday, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported.
The epicenter of the earthquake was at 7.22 degrees southern latitude and 114.56 degrees eastern longitude, some 83 kilometers southeast of Sumenep, and at a depth of five kilometers.
"Here, we did not feel the tremor, but my relatives in Sepudi Isle said they felt the earthquake for a few seconds," Ahmad Sholeh, a resident of Poteran Isle, Sumenep, stated during a telephonic conversation.
Poteran Isle is situated in the south of, and one of the closest isles to Sumenep land.
The quake's corresponding intensity was felt by those living in Sepudi Isle between III and IV on the Modified Mercallli Intensity (MMI) scale; Situbondo, at II-III MMI; and Banyuwangi, Denpasar, and Singaraja at II MMI.
The quake, of shallow intensity and tectonic in origin, was triggered by active fault activity.
In addition to being hit by the earthquake, measuring 5.0 on the Richter Scale, two aftershocks of magnitudes 3.0 and 3.6 respectively were also reported in Sumenep.
