Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - The observation post detected six avalanche earthquakes from Mount Merapi during a six-hour duration, starting midnight until 6 a.m. local time on Thursday, the Geology Disaster Technology Development and Research Center (BPPTKG) recorded.

The earthquakes produced amplitudes ranging from eight to 55 mm and lasted between 32 and 78 seconds, Hanik Humaida, the chairman of BPPTKG, stated here, Thursday.

The authorities have announced the second alert status for the volcano and banned all climbing activities within a three-kilometer radius of the volcano's crater designated as a danger zone, and entry is permitted only for research on disaster mitigation.

Locals residing along Gendol River have been recommended to maintain vigil in case the volcano emits lava.
