Waste-to-energy generating plants are being applied in cities allowed to treat waste into energy
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has revealed that Indonesia has developed waste-to-energy power plants in 12 cities in Indonesia.

"Waste-to-energy generating plants are being applied in cities allowed to treat waste into energy," Luhut Pandjaitan said here, Sunday when launching Clean Indonesia Movement.

Jakarta has a waste-to-energy power plant capable of treating 1,500 tons of waste daily.

The Government wants three to four waste-to-energy power plants to treat 8,000 tons of waste produced by Jakarta residents daily.

Similar plants exist in Medan (North Sumatra), Surabaya (East Java), Bali , Bandung (West Java), Manado (north Sulawesi) and several other cities.

The Government will also develop waste inceminators having minimal C02 in regions producing waste below 150 tons per day.

"Those inceminators will be located far away from settlement areas," he said.

President Joko Widodo has seen waste as a problem that needs to be handled seriously because it could damage the next generation, according to the minister.

He urged every body to care for and be willing to reduce waste production. He also called for a change of life style to reduce single-use plastic product usage.

"If you go for shopping, don't use plastic bags. Take your own reusable bags," he said.
