"Based on the results of our survey, 4.4 million (holidaymakers) choose to travel by bus."Bandung (ANTARA) - The government has predicted that more than 22.83 million Eid al-Fitr holidaymakers will travel by public transportation this year, up 4 percent compared to last year.
"Based on the results of our survey, 4.4 million (holidaymakers) choose to travel by bus," Director General of Land Transportation of the Transportation Ministry Budi Setyadi said at a coordination meeting on Eid-al-Fitr transportation 2019 here on Tuesday.
Setyadi said 2.4 million holidaymakers opt to travel by train, 1.4 million by plane, 4.3 million by private cars and 940 thousand by motorcycles.
"Until now, motorcyclists still dominate Java's northern coastal highway during the homecoming period," he said.
Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said this year's homecoming is themed "safe and harmonious homecoming" in accordance with President Joko Widodo's directives. As such, the public will feel secure during their travel.
To that end, the government will impose one-way traffic to anticipate congestion due to the influx of holidaymakers travelling from Jakarta and its surroundings to West Java and Central Java.
This year, an increasing number of homebound travellers are choosing to use the Trans Java toll road.
By imposing one-way traffic, he expressed hope that more vehicles will be able to travel on the Trans Java toll road and at a higher speed, thus cutting short the time taken for holidaymakers from Jakarta and its surroundings to reach their hometowns. EDITED BY INE
