High waves in the southern waters of Kebumen District, Central Java, damaged a number of semi-permanent stalls on several beaches in the region.
Speaking on Tuesday, Heri Purwoto of the Coordinating Agency of Public Relations Bureau of Kebumen District, in Central Java, on Tuesday, said the incident began at 02.00 continuing until 09.30 local time, with wave heights reaching 5-7 meters.
He noted that at Setrojenar Beach, Buluspesantren Subdistrict, a tidal wave reached 20-50 meters high from land damaging 65 semi-permanent stalls, destroying two stalls and badly hitting one monitoring post.
He added, however, that some traders had cleaned up their areas and again begun selling.
At Ambal Beach, Ambal Subdistrict, waves heavily damaged 30 stalls, and some traders have since moved to other locations.
Ciriwik / Suwuk Beach, Puring Subdistrict, affected 20 stalls.
Currently, waves remain high, in the range of 3-5 meters, with a sliding distance of 20-30 meters to land.
He appealed to stall owners and visitors to remain vigilant in the presence of high waves on the southern coast of Kebumen during the next 3 days.
