Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Tourism has encouraged Indonesian tourism personnel to gain professional certification to stay a step ahead in the competition on human resources at the ASEAN level.

The ministry's Deputy Assistant of Tourism Human Resources Development and Inter-Institutional Relations, Wisnu Bawa Tarunajaya, said here on Friday that tourism human resources must have the requisite competencies to compete in the global era, and this step should be taken to develop the quality of human resources in the country.

"If our workers do not possess regional competence, their role will be taken up by human resources from other countries," Tarunajaya remarked.

Tarunajaya stated that the national assessor training was held to welcome the Asean Economic Community. This year, the government is laying special emphasis on human resources.

"During this period, we facilitate training for front office, housekeeping, foods and beverages as well as other fields. We are optimistic that the participants would strictly follow it. This is since the continuation of the competency certification lies in the hands of the assessors," he emphasized.

To this end, his side held a Workplace Assessor (WPA) activity on June 18-23, 2019, in Bali to increase the number of assessors in the tourism sector.

"This is expected to produce assessors that possess the capability to conduct assessments or competency tests of participants in the scope of technical competence in accordance with the tourism sector," he added.
